...to promote and encourage for the public benefit the science and practice of clinical neurophysiology and related sciences
Every three years the BSCN organises a week-long residential training course in, Oxford. The 11th course will now take place at Pembroke College, Oxford from Monday 28th March to Friday 1st April 2022
For each course an international faculty brings together a field of knowledgeable and enthusiastic clinicians and scientists from the UK, Europe and the USA. The course consists of lectures, practical demonstrations, case discussions and quizzes.
Faculty members, all experts in their fields, will be available for informal discussions in College, and, in the evenings, in surrounding hostelries throughout the week. The course is intended for clinical neurophysiologists in training and those requiring an update on current practice, neurologists, clinical physiologists and clinical scientists.
The full course fee for residential attendance for the week has been set at £1200 to include 4 nights accommodation, breakfast, lunch and all refreshment breaks, plus a gala dinner on the Thursday night. Those travelling a distance to attend the course may wish to arrive early and additional nights accommodation at Pembroke college can be be booked via THIS LINK quoting the booking code BSCN2022. You will need to make a separate booking for each extra night and make a note in the reservation form that you are attending the BSCN course as well as using the above reference.
Several discounts are available:
As of February 2022 we are still anticipating that the course will take place. Registration fees are now:
BSCN Members: £1100
Trainees in clinical neurophysiology or a related discipline £800 (Non-UK trainees should contact the course organisers with evidence of their status to secure a discounted invitation.
Meals will be taken in the hall of Pembroke College and on Thursday evening there will be a gala dinner in hall, also included within the course fee.
In previous years we have had several requests for a 'non-residential' rate for those living near Oxford, and for single day attendance rates for those wishing to attend just one or two days. For the 2022 event we will be running the course as a 'hybrid' in person and online event. Registration for the online version of the event will be possible on a day by day basis. This will include:
Everyone who is present in person in Oxford will also be registered on the virtual event in order to facilitate communication between 'live' and 'virtual' attendees. The lectures and practical demonstrations will be made available for remote viewing for a period after the event via the BSCN website to allow those in other timezones to view comfortably. We will also be able to offer 1:1 chat facilities between virtual delegates but those attending virtually will unfortunately miss out on the convivial atmosphere that has characterised previous Oxford courses. There will NOT, unfortunately, be a non-residential rate for local residents. The 'virtual' version of the event will be run using the 'Hopin' platform (see the notes below). The costs will be a flat rate of £150 for each of the days Monday to Thursday, while the half day for Friday will be £100. Attending the entire week as a virtual delegate will therefore cost £700 with no further discounts. Trainees in particular are strongly encouraged to attend in person.
The following resources are currently available:
Booking is now open for in-person attendance through the BSCN events page. Payment is required through PAYPAL at the time of booking, please do not ask us to invoice your trust for payment. Registration for in-person attendance will close on 11th March 2022 as we have to finalise numbers with the college for accommodation and meals.
Registration for virtual attendance is now open and will CLOSE at noon on Sunday 27th March. Read the notes on Hopin below BEFORE booking
Cancellation policy - bookings will be fully refundable on cancellation by the delegate until 6 weeks prior to the event. Late cancellations after that date will attract a 50% penalty. From two weeks prior to the event there will be no refunds as we will be committed to paying the college for your place, though the society will consider exceptional mitigating circumstances on their merits. Should the society be unable to run the event, because of further developments in the COVID epidemic which mean that Pembroke College is not able to accommodate us we will provide full refunds as we did in 2020.
IMPORTANT NOTES ON HOPIN FOR THOSE REGISTERING FOR ONLINE ATTENDANCE
The online event platform we are using for this course 'Hopin' is not like Zoom or Teams with which we have all become familiar so do NOT assume that you can register for the meeting and then forget about it until casually logging in 5 minutes before the start of the event. Read these notes carefully and take advantage of the resources we have made available to help this run smoothly.
Registration - You will register and pay for the event as usual via the BSCN wesite events page and Paypal. Your receipt wil come from Paypal as usual. We will then email you a link to a Hopin registration page where you will have to register AGAIN for these events. The Hopin registration page will ask for your email address, institution etc but only your name will be visible to other delegates in the event unless you choose to share more details with other delegates. If you book for more than one day you will have to repeat this registration process for each day separately though you can streamline this process somewhat by creating your own (free) account on Hopin if you wish. Hopin will then email you your registration confirmation, joining links and reminders. This process of registering with Hopin looks just like booking any other event online with 'tickets' and a 'checkout' page but there is no more to pay - these are free tickets.
It may take us a few days to send you the Hopin registration link as this is not an automated process - DON'T PANIC - but also please register early, not on Saturday 26th!
Please do NOT share the Hopin registration links with others to allow them to also register for the event for free. We know who has paid, can see who has registered in Hopin in advance and who has come online during the event. We will evict gatecrashers. The email address you use to register with Hopin should match the one you use to book on the BSCN site, otherwise you may well be considered a gatecrasher.
There is a delegates hint sheet
We will host a free social 'practice' event on Sunday 27th March with some of the organising committee which you can drop in on to familiarise yourself with the user interface. The Hopin registration link wil be posted here before the event and emailed to all attendees.
Hopin is optimised for viewing using the Google Chrome Browser so download this if necessary and use it to connect. Unlike Zoom and Teams there is is no special desktop application to download. There are tablet and phone apps for Hopin but you will have by far the best experience if you connect using a computer and Chrome
The events will 'open' early so that you can connect to the reception page several days in advance to take a look at the interface and you can use some of the facilities such as messaging. You can therefore check your connection easily in advance.
We will operate a virtual helpdesk during these events which you will find by clicking the 'sessions' button at the left side of the reception page
If you get disconnected entirely from Hopin and cannot log back in we will also run a whatsapp group for the event which will be monitored by the helpdesk and you can ask for help there.
Although this sounds complicated Hopin will allow us to provide higher quality broadcast video and offers enhanced facilities for our exhibitors/sponsors and flexible ways for virtual delegates to interact with each other, with the faculty, and with exhibitors.
